Mentee Case Study

Mentee Story

Jess O'Sullivan, Alumni

Jess graduated from the University of York with an undergraduate degree in politics in summer 2020. Jess found that finishing her degree and looking for graduate work during the Covid-19 pandemic had a knock-on effect on how she was feeling about herself and her future - but with the support of her mentor, she has managed to stay positive and proactive despite the challenges.

“Job hunting can be really consuming and you start thinking things like ‘I haven’t got a job yet, so I’m a failure."

One of the first things [my mentor] said to me was, ‘You don’t have to rock up and pretend like everything is rosy. If you want to use this hour as an opportunity to rant about the world, and how difficult it is to get a job, then that’s fine. I’m with you.’

We spent an hour and a half chatting about everything apart from work - family, friends, uni, hobbies, travelling… Just life really. It felt like a conversation with a friend and that she was seeing me as a whole person. It was exactly what I needed.”
